Popular image conversions
Which format should I pick?
- Photos for the web: WebP or AVIF for the smallest files; JPG when maximum compatibility matters.
- Logos, screenshots, transparency: PNG (lossless) or WebP.
- Favicons and Windows icons: ICO, made from a square PNG of at least 256 × 256 px.
- Old software and printers: JPG or BMP.
What about HEIC iPhone photos?
HEIC can only be decoded by browsers that support it, which today mostly means Safari on Mac and iPhone. If your browser can’t open a HEIC file, set your iPhone to Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible to shoot JPG, or open this page in Safari.
How it works
Each image is decoded by your browser, drawn onto an off-screen canvas (resized if you set a maximum width) and re-encoded in the target format. BMP and ICO files are assembled byte by byte in JavaScript. Because nothing is uploaded, large batches convert as fast as your device allows.
Want to embed a small image straight into HTML or CSS? Turn it into a data URI with the Base64 encoder. To check that a download wasn’t altered, compare checksums with the hash generator.
Frequently asked questions
Is this image converter really free?
Yes. There are no limits, watermarks or sign-ups, because conversion uses your own device rather than our servers.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Files are read and converted by JavaScript in your browser tab. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads.
Why is my PNG bigger than the JPG?
PNG is lossless, so it stores every pixel exactly. For photos that usually means a larger file than JPG or WebP. Use PNG for graphics and screenshots.
Can I convert to AVIF?
Only if your browser can encode AVIF. The AVIF option is disabled when it can’t; decoding AVIF works in all current major browsers.
Does converting keep EXIF data such as location?
No. Re-encoding through a canvas drops EXIF metadata, including GPS location, which is often a privacy bonus.
